I think it’s safe to say that Maldives is on everyone’s bucket list- if it’s not, hopefully this post will convince you to put it on there, and soon. One international 4 hour flight, another internal flight within Maldives and a 20 minute boat ride later, we had arrived in the paradise that is Outrigger Konotta. Even though we took a red eye flight to get there, as soon as well arrived and saw the pristine white beach paired with azure blue sea, our eyes were wide with excitement.
Some cold fresh coconuts later, we were whisked away through overcrowded palm tree lines sandy paths to spend two glorious nights in a beach villa. Our villa had two bedrooms, three 3 bathrooms, a sitting and dining area plus kitchen. Outside, we had our own private pool and a few steps away was the most blue and luminous sea you could ever have imagined.
Our days were spent snorkeling, paddle boarding and swimming in our private pool, collecting shells on the beach or idling and doing nothing much. The kids had a wonderfully jam packed schedule of swimming (they kept jumping from the resort’s main pool to our private pool as well as the pool in the kid’s club), visits to the children’s club as well as bespoke cooking sessions with the chef. They collected coconuts around the island, crab hunted and made wonderful crafts with their host, Iris.
On our second day, the children went on a submarine ride to check out the house reef around the island. The spotted all kinds of colorful marine life, reef sharks, octopus, a manta ray and even a turtle. In the evening, we went on our first experience of line fishing. We had a friendly competition with our captain and caught 8 fish in total including parrot, trout and catfish. It was such a fun experience and they grilled the trout for us as a starter that evening.
On Day 3, we shifted to an over water villa to experience what it feels like sleeping over the ocean. It was surreal being able to dive off our deck and straight into the ocean and snorkel. much time was also spent baking on the overwater hammocks. The kids loved the infinity pool on our deck and found the outdoor shower an absolute novelty. Just walking to and from the overwater villas was an experience for us as we tried to spot different fish under the decks. Me and mum visited the spa that evening which was absolutely blissful (the kids were kindly looked after by Iris who helped them bake their own pizzas so it was a win win situation!) Once we had completed our massage, we spent another couple of hours sipping on ginger tea in the hydro pool whilst listening to the waves crashing on our doorstep. Divine!
Just when we thought our experience couldn’t get any better, we had an outstanding teppanyaki dinner at Nala Rah. I can’t say our family is a fan of Japanese food and the kids had never tried it before but we had one of the most fun and entertaining nights ever- every course was cooked right on the grill in front us. The food was sublime and chef Endar did an outstanding job of adapting the menu to our complicated and varied dietary requirements. He was such an easy entertainer and full of energy. The kids even learnt to make their own sushi and would you believe, have since been asking to go to a sushi restaurant here in Dubai. Definite Japanese food converts here.
For our last night, Outrigger saved the best for last and we had a bespoke menu created for us. We dined under the stars on the beach and it was a stunning backdrop to a culinary journey through India. Each course was picked from a different state in India. We sampled a delicately spiced tomato soup, grilled prawns in a mild coconut infused curry and had a cheesecake with a twist for dessert. Total barefoot luxury.
Suffice it to say, our 4 night stay at Outrigger Maldives was a once in a lifetime experience made extra special by the staff at the resort. With over 50 rooms, we never felt the island was crowded and loved the intimate service that was provided. The children still remember this as one of their best holidays.
